The station was built as part of the Piccadilly Line extension to
Cockfosters and opened in 1932. The station was named after a now-closed public house which was nearby. The station building was designed by Charles Holden, the station originally had nine exits. Some exits which served now-withdrawn tram srvices have been closed.
When the Victoria Line was being planned it was considered to transfer Manor House to the new line. Nothing came of these plans though the Victoria Line runs underneath the station.
